Installing a moisture barrier below the hardwood can provide added protection from dampness. Do not use excess water for cleaning the floor – a vacuum and a mop is more than enough.

Choosing the Right Hardwood for Your Flooring

An outstanding benefit of hardwood flooring is that there are many types of wood that can be used to integrate the flooring with the décor of a room. Red and White Oak are among the most popular choices because of their pale natural beauty. Of the two, White Oak is the harder. The Benefits of Hardwood Floors

While it is true that hardwood floors are more difficult to install than other types, modern manufacturers engineer the planks to ensure uniformity and a stable fit. The level of difficulty is not so much as to be a negative point. Hardwood floors are tough and long lasting and unlike carpets, if damage does occur, the flooring can be repaired to make it as good as new. Carpets need to be thrown away.

Hardwood floors are simple & easy to clean and a weekly vacuuming and mopping is usually all that is required, except in very high traffic areas where more frequent cleaning can be done. Additionally hardwood floors do not accumulate dust particles and allergens making the interior of the home a healthier place. This is of particular benefit to those suffering from allergies or dust sensitivity. A wide variety of surfaces and stains are available so that the flooring can be customized to provide the kind of finish that the homeowner wants. Changing the staining can change to complete look of a room.

Tough and Aesthetically Pleasing

Because hardwood floors are so durable and long lasting, they can be used anywhere in the house, including work and high traffic areas. If, after some time, the look of the floor needs a change, this can be accomplished by simply adding a few throw rugs to the room’s décor. Those interested in having homes that are environmentally friendly and leave the smallest carbon footprint, will find what they are looking for with hardwood floors. Wood is a renewable resource and today much of the hardwood available comes from renewable commercial forests over which a strict control is kept.

And because of it beauty and durability, installing hardwood floors in home is a cost effective way of increasing its value. In summary, while hardwood floors may be more expensive that other options, they pay for themselves in the long run far better than the other flooring choices do. And although it is not a material benefit, most homeowners say that hardwood floors give a home a feel of solidity that no other kind of flooring offers.

Renovation Ideas for a Small Bathroom

If your home features a small bathroom, you may feel like there isn’t much you can do to improve the space. However, even small bathrooms can be improved and turned into luxurious spaces that make you proud. Consider some of these clever and unique ideas to transform even the smallest bathroom in your home.

Get Bold with Color
Small spaces usually demand the use of lighter colors to make them feel open, but you can go dark and daring if the room has plenty of natural light. A small bathroom with a window that allows the sunshine to flood in can be finished with deep reds, star-filled blues and even the black of night.

Smoke and Mirrors
Known for playing tricks with your eyes, smoke and mirrors are the hallmark of any great illusionist. Put the mirrors to work for you by adding them to the one wall of the space. It visually expands any bathroom, and makes the room feel larger and more welcoming.

Eliminate Cabinets
You want the extra storage, but cabinets in a small bathroom consume floor space and make it feel claustrophobic. Opt for a pedestal sink to open up the floor space. Consider adding a small table for extra supplies. You will have to keep towels and extra toiletries in the hall closet, but your bathroom will feel roomier and more sophisticated. If you really need the storage of a cabinet, then consider adding a floating vanity that will provide you with storage without taking up extra room on the floor.

Move the Fixtures
If you are doing a full renovation, then you may be able to move fixtures around. Consider replacing the bath tub with a corner shower to open up space and make the room more functional. Builders don’t always make the best use of space, and you have the opportunity to take advantage of space saving fixtures that may not have been available when your home was constructed. If you replace the tiles in your bath, move the showerhead closer to the ceiling for a luxurious look and feel.

Install a Skylight
If you don’t have a window in the bathroom, there is still a way to bring in natural light. Install skylights that use aluminum tubes to bring light from the outside into your bathroom. They are easy to install in an existing home, and they don’t usually require much retrofitting. If you have attic space over your bathroom, tubular skylights are an excellent choice for opening up the space with natural light.

Go for the Glamour
One of the benefits of a small bathroom is that you don’t have to buy very many supplies. There’s only one sink, the tub isn’t very large and you don’t have a great deal of wall space. This means that you can get creative, spend a little more on fixtures and enjoy the glamorous pieces you would normally avoid. Install luxurious marble, elegant fabric wallpaper, gold trimmed faucets and crystal wall sconces. With so much glamour around you, the small space will disappear from your mind.

Even a small bathroom can become a source of beauty and pride with a little creativity. Leave the pastel paint at the store and consider bold wallpaper and brilliant shades. Consider moving fixtures for a more functional floor plan, and opt for glamorous fixtures that will bring you a great deal of pleasure. Your tiny bathroom may not have much floor space, but it can still have a ton of style.
